The Winddrinker
Winners at TEDx Amsterdam of the "Ideas Worth Doing", Winddrinker has learned through doing.
We can create enough enough water for the daily drinking needs of over 5,000 people. This makes us a mid-market solution - ideal for refugee camps, towns, hotels, or municipal governments short on water.
Our decentralized desalination system uses only wind power to turn brackish or sea water into clean, affordable drinking water. Desalination solutions have reached a tipping point. Long considered unsustainable due to energy needs and costs, desalination is now possible due to new efficiencies, new designs, and the reduced costs of sustainable energy technologies. As the planet warms and water resources dry along the coasts, desalination becomes exponentially important as a solution to combat water shortages. We believe that decentralized desalination will become the new norm. Our work always starts on the ground, working alongside local communities and entrepreneurs to assess and co-create solutions. Working with local partners and entrepreneurs, we design tailor made solutions designed with our software model, which optimizes conditions to produce clean water in maximum quantities.
We currently have a pilot project in Berbera, Somaliland. There we developed our own fully mechanical system that is more efficient than other systems, is low cost, and is easy to maintain with local workforces.
