EWERDIMA Stands for Early Warning Early Response Disaster Management.
Being unfortunate that am from Bududa, Mbale, Uganda. In August 2011, Bududa, was hit with landslide causing death and loss of property. The same happened to Haiti. Remote areas get publicity only when drastic disaster and harzadous events occur. Together we can save life during a Disaster. This situation put me to test to find out what I could have done to save life during disasters. The main reason as to why lives are lost and property destroyed during disasters and crisis is because there are inappropriate communication methods between victims of disaster and Disaster Stakeholders amidst the rapidly changing technology in both mobile and web.
The evolution of future wireless communication systems imposes a strong requirement on the efficiency of spectrum usage, which is expected to be leveraged by interacting and cooperating cognitive radio systems (CRS). It is very difficult to find unused radio spectrum resources to allocate future wireless communication systems. However, sharing the same spectrum allocations for specific purposes can be achieved to release additional spectrum resources and can be utilized in reduction in the loss of lives during a disaster through Early Warning and Early Response to victims during a disaster. This transmission is redirected to manage RF communications to different household units and an emergency button pressed incase of disaster. Mobile technologies are key in communication and they are vital in Disaster Management.
EWERDIMA, a Timely warning and reporting of projected disaster tool enhances timely evacuation of victims during a disaster and emergency crisis. Direct location of victims and affected households during a disaster.
EWERDIMA is a tool that will be deployed in different locations mainly households, hospitals, etc to enhance communication between victims of a disaster and the key persons who save lives in times of Disaster Hazards.
EWERDIMA Mobile is an application that will be installed on user handsets and once the user has the app installed they will be able to receive disaster notifications on their handsets and also send disaster alerts to Disaster Management Points and Stakeholders.
This is mainly based on Rapid Radio Communication and Location based radio device to enhance duplex communication between the victimized and disaster response teams to save lives of victims during disaster. The tool alerts the household members about a disaster breakout such that they can evacuate the premises before the hazard. In case one is victim, they are able to press the emergency button which sends response to the disaster team for immediate action to save a life.
The scenario is that a Disaster has been identified, then the message is communicated to the different households and users about the foreseen disaster. In the case one is a victim and they have a handset, they will be able to send a Disaster alert message notifying the Disaster Team that they are in Calamity. The Disaster team will have a map showing the different locations where the devise alert message is coming from and they will be able to respond to the Disaster. Devices include, Mobile Handset as a tool for disaster reporting tool, a laptop which shows a Disaster Monitoring map with the different location of the different devices which will be able to communicate with the Device. A Smartphone is used in the device to represent RF/GPS radio based on its inbuilt GPS functionality.
